Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Photographer and friend of Aro Ha, Sally Goodall to return to retreat. By nature, her camera came out during her time here, capturing our beautiful surroundings and the quiet moments of connection.

In this journal entry, we explore Sally’s creative journey and discover how presence, stillness, and self-care shape her art. From sunrise yoga to evenings spent in meaningful conversation under wide, starry skies, Sally reflects on how Aro Ha’s philosophy of mindful living continues to influence her craft.

Join us as we dive into the art of seeing - through Sally’s eyes.

Can you share a bit about yourself and your journey into photography?

“I’m Sally, your nature-loving, joy-seeking, always-smiling photographer who truly sees you. My photography journey began when I was just 10 years old. I studied film photography in high school but initially pursued a career in adventure tourism in Queenstown New Zealand. In my mid-twenties, I discovered my true passion photographing my friends' weddings. I then spent over a decade as a full-time wedding photographer, specialising in natural light photography shooting both within Australia & travelling around the globe capturing destination weddings. Over the past 5 years, I’ve shifted my focus to working with brands and businesses, and I’m currently working with my dream clients both here in Melbourne as well as within Australia & internationally wherever my work takes me.”

What draws you to capturing people and places in a way that tells a deeper story?

“My innate curiosity and empathy compel me to connect with people on a deeper level. I’m constantly observing the world, seeking unique perspectives and hidden narratives. By focusing on subtle nuances, I create images that evoke emotions and spark curiosity. Ultimately, my goal is to capture raw emotions, authentic interactions, and unique details that define a person, place, or moment.”

What was it like to experience Aro Ha as a guest and capture it through the lens?

“The experience was truly awe-inspiring. I was torn between immersing myself in the moment and capturing its beauty. I learned to balance being present and photographing the surroundings. Photography enhanced my experience, allowing me to recharge and reset. The freedom and lightness I felt are essential for a balanced and inspired creative life.”

How did the connections you formed impact your creativity?

“The connections I formed significantly impacted my creativity. Building rapport with guests allowed me to capture intimate moments that would be impossible on a typical photoshoot. These connections fostered a sense of collaboration and creative synergy, unlocking new levels of creativity and expression.”

Was there an aspect of the retreat that surprised you?

"I was used to relying heavily on the clock to manage my workload, especially with the intense hours leading up to the retreat. So, the "no clock" rule was an unexpected challenge. Being mindful of time before the retreat had been important, but learning to embrace the experience without clocks during the retreat taught me a valuable lesson about cultivating mindfulness."

How did the retreat environment impact the way you saw and felt the space?

“The thoughtful design of the architecture created a sense of calm. Aro Ha’s philosophy pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, reminding me that true growth comes from embracing discomfort.”

Were there emotionally significant moments beyond the visual?

“The mornings were special—waking up with the sun peeking over the mountains and the tui bird singing. The daily hikes and spotting a wild deer created profound connections to nature. Evenings spent watching the sunset in the hot tub, sharing deep conversations, are etched into my memory.”

How did immersing yourself in Aro Ha’s activities influence your creativity?

“The combination of breathwork, movement, nourishment, and stillness created the perfect environment for my creativity to flourish. Aro Ha reminded me of the importance of self-care.”

How would you describe the essence of Aro Ha in three words?

“Nourishing, connection, and perspective-shifting.”

Did the experience influence you beyond the camera?

“It was absolutely transformative. It reminded me that well-being encompasses mental and emotional health, not just physical. The people I met were inspiring, and I’m grateful to now call them lifelong friends.”
